537. Empire Carved Mahogany Cornucopiae and Dolphin Sofa
American, circa 1820
Good specimen for this period. The back rail, seat rail and arms un-
carved and delicately molded; the faces of the voluted ends realistically
carved as dolphins with scaly bodies, and the front supports with cornu-
copiae of fruits and foliage developing lion’s paw. Upholstered in
black hair cloth. Good example. Length, 8 feel

538. Chippendale Carved Mahogany Lowboy, Attributed to
John Goddard Newport, R. 1., Xl'lll Century
Rectangular body containing one long drawer above two small drawers;
below, the skirt is cut in a series of cyma-curves and carved at centre
with a depressed fluted shell. Cyma-molded top, four angular cabriole
legs, the front legs terminating in claw and ball feet and decorated on
the knee with intaglio carving of scrolled acanthus and pendent an-
themia. The rear legs plain, ending in pad feet. Drawers furnished
with a handsome set of Chippendale brasses.
Height, 32 inches; length, 34y2 inches
Note: The lowboy was obtained from a descendant of Stephen Hopkins, signer
of the Declaration of Independence.
