57 Delphi. PI. 12,2 (F. de D. v, 152, figs. 630, 630 a,
the latter retouched so that the panther-bird be-
comes a siren ; Johansen pi. 27, 2). In the lower
58 frieze, coursing hounds. Berlin 340, from Vulci.
PI. 15, 2-3. (Genick, Gr. Keramik, pi. 36, 6-7;
Johansen pi. 43, 3). Very close to the alabastra
nos. 88, 9 (pi. 12, 5-6).
Different style: coarser and broader. Broader shape
also, in reaction against the tapering form of the late
Protocorinthian period.
59 Carlsruhe 2684 (Johansen pi. 44, 2). 1, panther,
bull, goat, and two figures, one shooting. 2, as be-
fore, but the dogs are chasing a hare into a net.
60 Leipzig T 2333, from Greece. Mouth and neck
modern. At base, tongues. 1, goat, lion, bull,
swan, boar. 2, as before. The last possibly, nos. 72,
61 73 certainly, by the same hand. Corneto (Monte-
lius, Civ. Prim. pi. 298, 5). Two friezes of goats,
lions, &c.; a third of coursing hounds. Very close to
the preceding.
Large vases: ht. 14-15 cm.
62 Copenhagen 4713, from Thebes (C.V.A. pi. 86, 1;
Johansen pi. 43, 1; Pfuhl fig. 62). 1, swan between
63 sphinxes, lion. 2, swan, coursing hounds. Berlin
inv. 3269, from Thebes (Johansen pi. 43, 2). By the
same hand as the last, differing only in small details;
no. 90 (pi. 15,1) is very near in style to these two vases.
64 Carthage (Delattre, Necrop. de Douimes (Cosmos
1897) p. 26 figs. 48, 9). 1, swan between sphinxes,
swan, hornless stag (?). 2, hounds coursing hares.
In field, in 1, incised rosettes and dotted circles as
well as dot-rosettes. Found with early Corinthian
aryballoi (nos. 519, 563 b). Evidently connected
65 with foregoing, but later-looking. Delphi (F. de D.
v, 155 fig. 641). Swan between sphinxes, bird, ? bull.
2, as before. The fragment op. cit. fig. 625 also
belongs to this group.
66 Naples 128514, from Cumae (Johansen p. 167).
Ht. 11 cm. without mouth and neck. Animal frieze
at centre; the rest black, with polychrome scales and
tongues. Doe, lions, goat, bird. Lively drawing.
67 Thera (A.M. 1903, Beilage 34,1; Johansen p. 167).
Ht. at least 15 cms Same scheme as before; in
frieze, lion, boar, swan. No incision in the drawing,
but red used. Mouth, double tongues; base rays.

ALABASTRA
Shape as pi. 15 or fig. 118. Decoration in narrow A.
bands: if in one band, then with long tongues on
neck and base. Small vases, average ht. c. 7-8 cm.
The first three may well be Protocorinthian (cf.
no. 36).
From Koile (Thracian Chersonese), (B.C.H. 1912, 67 a
pi. 4, 1). 1, sphinxes, bull; 2, dogs. Tubingen 68

tongues on neck, check pattern. Below each frieze,

as before, but check (large double dots) below each
frieze. 1, lions, bird between sphinxes. 2, lions and

style to nos. 62, 3. 75 a is by the same hand as the
