PREFACE.

To those who may be disposed to consult the following
pages in the prosecution of a most agreeable accomplish-
ment, it will be satisfactory to know that the information,
which they contain, is derived from a source which may
be unhesitatingly depended upon. This statement rests
upon the Author’s admitted skill as an artist, and,
above all, upon his long experience as a Master. One
great object which he kept in view, in the preparation of
the work, was to divest it as much as possible of the
technicalities of Art ; combining the laying down of a
few general principles, absolutely necessary to be under-
stood in the outset, with a full and copious detail of
practice and manipulation. The tables of columns and
tints, suited to every variety of object and effect, will be
found especially and eminently useful; and it may be
added that, while these tables may be fully relied upon,
as the result of much thought and long experience, they
will prove adequate to the resources presented by the
high state of colour manufacture, and to the require-
ments of the advanced powers of Water-Colour Painting.
