SHIPPING AND BOATS.

9. SHIPPING AND BOATS.
The introduction of vessels of any kind will not only
require some knowledge of their construction, but of
their positions, as well as of the quantity of sails to be
set. The direction and force of the wind, too, must ever
be borne in mind, that a proper consistency, as regards
this element, may be maintained in the disposition of the
sails, vane, cordage, and other objects influenced and
acted upon by the wind.
When judiciously arranged, nothing can give more
beautiful pyramidical and curved forms of composition
than shipping; their sails, from the variety of their
shapes and colour, serving to give points of effect,
whether of relief or of breadth.
There are few objects more picturesque than a group
of old fishing-boats on the beach, with their sails half
unfurled or lying about, partially hanging over the sides
of the brine-worn hull. The dark and open net, broadly
spread from mast to mast, with baskets piled or thrown
into careless confusion, serve also to make up the fore-
ground with singular felicity; while the costume of the
fishermen themselves, with their slouched hats and
weather-beaten faces, are scarcely less picturesque.
Linear perspective is of great importance in this branch
of the Art, from the fact of a constant fore-shortening,
and a great variety of angles, always occurring. It is
therefore advisable to take every advantage of sketching
from Nature, in order to become conversant with every
kind of vessel desirable for pictorial effect.
