are many standards of excellence, upon which our first
and rudimental efforts should be founded; but the ulti-
mate and safe rule is, “ Study Nature well/'’ and, as she
is read, so let her be depicted,—not in the manner of
another, but in a style which you have dared to make
peculiarly your own.
