COLOURS FOR BROOKS, ETC.

rather thinner, add a little water; but if thicker, allow it
to remain a few minutes, when it will be fit to produce
the most vivid and sparkling lights. The brush should
receive it only at the top, where it can be better managed,
and thus decided and angular forms can be more easily
put down. Fresh white must constantly be taken, or
the sharpness will not be apparent. A small flat sable is
very serviceable, and, in most cases where Chinese White
has to be used, is much better than a round one. In
running streams, where the lights are not left, their
insertion should be reserved for the finish, in order to
preserve their clearness. The knife is very successful in
taking out sharp lights, as well as in those which are
more soft, and produces the effect of foam with great
facility. Lights may also be taken out by rubbing, as.
before described.
