Preface

This volume is mainly a collection of articles based on the papers delivered during the First
Central European Conference of Young Egyptologists. Egypt 1999: Perspectives of Research, which was
held from the 7th to 9th of June 1999 in the Institute of Archaeology in Warsaw. There are also
included articles by those who were unable to attend the Conference and we are especially
indebted to these contributors. We would like the publication to present the current state of
knowledge about Ancient Egypt with special regard to the perspectives of research. The aim
of this publication is to show the way Egyptology could develop in the next miUennium.

The Conference was organised and this publication prepared at the suggestion of our col-
league Andrzej CWIEK. We acknowledge and recognise that such a concept gave us the op-
portunity to meet and discuss our current studies.

There are a number of people to whom this book owes a great deal. The Organising Com-
mittee wishes to acknowledge and thank the Board of Directors of the Institute of Archaeol-
ogy at Warsaw University for making available the premises. We would like to thank most
sincerely the Director of our Institute, Professor Tomasz MIKOCKI for his warm-hearted
encouragement, friendship and support.

We are truly indebted to Professor Karol MYSLIWIEC for his remarks and comments con-
cerning this publication, his inestimable support and encouragement and we are most grateful
for the Professor’s participation in the Conference itself as well as in the Proceedings.

Before this book could be produced, Ms Jadwiga IWASZCZUK assisted by Mr Mikdaj
GRZYBOWSKI contributed gratuitously, a prolonged effort involving careful and meticulous
attention to detail using their extensive technical skills and knowledge of the DTP process. To
them we also extend our grateful thanks. No less cordially, we acknowledge our debt to Mr
Cédric TAVERNIER who proofread the article written in French free of cost and to Ms Karen
HAUFF who helped us with the German texts.

By virtue of the need for a rapid publication, it has not proved possible to put into practice
absolute editorial standardisation, and the reader will fmd a small degree of variation in the
abbreviation system from paper to paper.

Encouraged by the favourable response to and support for our first venture, we are commit-
ted to using our best endeavours to repeat the event on a regular biannual basis.

On behalf of the Organising Committee
