Art of Juliusz Studnicki during Interwar period

Juliusz Gizbert-Studnicki (Kniażyce, 1906 - Warszawa, 1978) after graduating from
high school in Przemyśl he began study at Cracow Academy of Fine Arts during
years 1924-1929 under the guidance of Władysław Jarocki, Józef Mehoffer, Wojciech
Weiss and Felicjan Szczęsny Kowarski who taught him on the course of decorative
painting. In 1930 artist moved to Warsaw where he perfected his skills as a painter
between 1930 and 1932 at the School of Fine Arts. In 1931 he founded The Group of
Six which later changed its name to Pryzmat (Prism), gathering painters inspired by
naturę and focusing their interests in Colourism, popular at time in Polish painting.

Studnicki painted still lives and portraits of his family and friends but at that time
his art was dominated by landscapes both rural and urban, especially his hometown -
Przemyśl. Flis canvas in the 1930s characterized with tiny touches of brush stylized to
Impressionism, Pissarro in particular. During that time the artist presented his works
at the Salons of The Institute of Art Propaganda in Warsaw, where in 1936 he had his
first solo exhibition and in the year following he travelled to Paris. In France he expe-
rienced the art of Cezanne, Bonnard and Vuillard who were great inspiration for him
later on. While in Paris, Studnicki madę exhibition in prestige art gallery Bernheim-
-Jeune named Exposition de six peintres polon ais alongside his fellow artists Krystyna
Łada, Zdzisław Ruszkowski, Wacław Zawadowski, Jacek Żuławski and Hanna Jasińska.
In 1938 artist returned to Poland where he maintained his art movement until an out-
break of World War II.
