IHAVE endcavoured, to the befl: of
my abilities, and according to the ob»
fervations I have made in a long habit of
refledtion on the fubjedt, to trace the ideas
we have of the pidturefque, through the
dirferent works of art and nature j and it
appears to me, that in all objefts of flght,
in buildings, trees, water, ground, in thc
human fpecies, and in other animals, the
fame general principles uniformly prevail;
and that even light and fhadow, and co-
lours, have the Arongeft conformity to
thofe principles. I have compared both
its caufes and effedts, with thofe of the
fublime and the beautiful; I have fhewn
