FROM all that has been ftated in the
laft chapter, pidtiirefquenefs appears
to hold a ftation between beauty and fubli-
mity 3 and on that account, perhaps, is more
frequently, and more happily blended with
them both, than they are with each other.
It is, however, perfedtly diftindt .from either;
for in the firft place it is evident that pidlu-
refquenefs and beauty are founded on very

an exception, which, inftead of weakening, confirms
what I have faid, and fhews the conftant oppofition of
the two charadters, even where their caufes appear to be
confounded.

Baldnefs, is 'the fmoothnefs of age and decay, not of
youth,health, and frelhnefs: it is picturefque, from pro-
