2 Dedication to Sir James Graham.—Sib James, when
Secretary to the Home Department, was accused of having
opened letters addressed to Mazzini, then an Italian refugee
in England.

11 To Governesses of Decided Piety.—Punch has again
and again called attention to the miserable stipends offered to
Governesses, and he believes his remonstrances have not been
made in vain.

14 The King- of Saxony in Trouble.—Alter the departure
of the Empebob of Russia, the King of Saxony was lionised
tremendously.

20 Prospectus.—Before the Opening of the Great Western
Railway, Waterloo Bridge was a very unprofitable concern.

22 The Hero of Waterloo.— The Wellington Statue in
front of the Royal Exchange.

23 Running Rein Morality.—The case referred to arose
out of a daring fraud perpetrated by certain blacklegs. A
three year old horse was substituted for a two year old, and
run in the name of Running Rein. One horse was destroyed
and buried immediately after the race. The head was subse-
quently exhumed and produced in Court during the trial.

32 Case of Real Distress.—This article and illustration
excluded Punch from France for some time.

33 The Queen's Visit is a parody of the Court Newsman's
account of the Queen's visit to the Exhibition of Works of
Art in Westminster Hall, June 28, 1844.

35 The Boy Jones and the Boy Joinville. — The Boy

Jones had been found upon two occasions concealed in Buck-
ingham Palace. It having been ascertained that he was in-
fluenced by curiosity only, he was sent on board a man-of-war.
Pbi>ce Joinville had recently bombarded Tangiers and
Mogador.

37 Culinary Intelligence. — Monsieur Soyeb here men-
tioned afterwards became a celebrity.

38 The Great Dog Question.—An act was passed to pre-
vent the use of dogs as animals of draught.

4-1 The City of London Disfranchised.--He. I'axtison,
M.P. for the City of London, was a very stout man.

53 Dread of Clairvoyance.—The boy Alexis pretended to
see objects with the back of his head.

Captain Warner's Disclosure.—Captain Warner had 53
by means of a submarine shell blown up the John 0'Gaunt
hulk at Brighton. The experiment, although successful, pro-
duced no beneficial results to the inventor, and he died poor
and neglected.

What is to be done with Sudbury ?—This seat was 56
apportioned with others in 1861.

The Affair at Tahiti.—A French sentinel at Tahiti 71
having been disarmed and ill-used by the natives, it was deter-
mined by the French authorities to make Me. Peitchaeb,
the English Consul, responsible. Mb. Pbitchabd was thrown
into prison by Count D'Aubigny. At the intercession
of Captain Gordon, of the Cormorant, Mr. Pritchard
was released on condition that he should not remain on the
Society Islands. Sir R. Peel declared in the House of Com-
mons that a gross outrage, accompanied with much indignity,
had been committed. The French Government made imme-
diate reparation, and paid Mr. Pritchard a sum of money as
an indemnity.

A Duplicate. — Mr. Faber invented a Speaking Machine, 73
which could pronounce several words with great distinctness.

Gibbs Mayor.—Alderhan Gibbs had incurred much 163
scandai by withholding the Churchwarden accounts of
Walbrook."

The Visit of the King of the French.—Louis Phi- 170
lippe, then King of the French, landed at Portsmouth,
October 5, 1844, and was received with the heartiest demon-
stration of national welcome. Louis Philippe wTas the first
French monarch who ever landed in the British islands on a
visit of peace and amity. For explanation of Affecting Recon-

The Queen's Visit to the City.—Heb Majesty opened 181
the Royal Exchange October 28, 1844.

Princely Thrift. — Punch- was listened to, and Kennington 190
Park is the result.

The Geese on the Thames.—Mr. Barry was Clown 191
at Astley's, and exhibited himself on the Thames in a washing-
tub drawn by geese.

Margate at Vauxhall.—A project of this nature was 213
started, but failed of completion.
