HARVARD AFRICAN STUDIES

(d) As stated above under ring-beads, the disc- and ring-beads of white shell are difficult
to distinguish and are all noted here under disc-beads. Beads of this material, it will be
seen, were widely distributed, but occurred more often with the poorer burials. They were
manifestly cheap, easily made beads, held in no great estimation.

KI:
Rooms on the west — H (two lots of 38 and 55 beads); Y/l (one lot of 19 beads);
diam., 3-9 mm.
Kill:
Debris of mound and corridor — eight lots, of which one was on drawstring of
leather skirt, and another had 465 ring-beads; diam. of disc-beads, 6-18 mm.
Graves — K 308 (from bead pot-net); K 338 (65 beads; diam., 5 mm.).
KIV:
Corridor B — No. east vii (138 beads), No. 28 (78 beads), No. 44 (4 beads);

Graves — K 412 (5 beads), 414 (one), 421 (large lot), 453 (pot-net); diam.,
4-8 mm.; four lots.
KX:
Corridor B — Nos. xxxi, 19, 57, 66, 82, 244, 299, 316, 326, 332, 393, 397, xiv;
diam., 4-8 mm.; thirteen lots of from 2 to 89 beads with average of about 25.
Graves — K 1001, 1002, 1024, 1033, 1059, 1096; diam., 5-6 mm.; six lots from
skirts.
KXIV:
Debris — two small lots of small ring-beads.
KXV:
Debris on south — large lots of ring-beads mixed with blue faience ring-beads,
probably from pot-net.
KXVI:
Chamber B, debris — one lot (ca. 47 beads); diam., 5 mm.
Chamber C — Nos. 2 (pot-net), 15 (3 beads), 24 (10 beads), 29 (on skirt), lii-f
(185 beads); five lots.
Graves — K 1603 (skirt), 1618 (21 ring-beads), 1625 (pot-net), 1626 (few),
1628 (few); five lots.
KXVII:
Debris — one lot of 25 ring-beads with blue faience ring-beads.
K XVIII:
Chamber B — three small lots.
Graves — 1802 (one small lot), 1803 (five lots; three from skirts); all ring-beads;
six lots.
K XIX:
Debris — one lot of about 70 beads; diam., 4± mm.
KXX:
With bodies — three small lots.
K XXIII:
Debris — few small ring-beads.
K XXXVIII:
Grave — K 3801, on skirt of body B.
K XXXIX:
Debris — 140 ± disc-beads and 25 ring-beads.
KXL:
Debris — 73 disc-beads.
K Cem. B:
Graves — K B 21, 22, 37; a few scattering disc-beads.
Nub. Cem.:
Graves — K 5415 (few ring), K 5431 (few disc); K M 3, 15, 18, 41.

Disc-heads of stone were found only in KX. I call them disc-beads because of their great
diameter, but they might have been called large ring-beads. They are all of a rudely worked
form with large holes bored from both sides with a broad point.
