issue with many writers and artists, as for instance, in a brief taie entitled "Lycas, oder die Erfindung der
Gârten" (1762) by Salomon Gessner:

Dann sagt der Hirt, der voriibergeht, wenn ihm die Zephire die Geruche weit her entgegen tragen,
welcher Gottheit ist dieser Ort heilig? Gehôrt er der Venus, oder hat ihn Diana so schôn geschmiickt, um
miid' von der Jagd hier zu schlummern?13

No spécifie référence to the universe of Diana Aricina is at hand in the Chigi layout. There is neither
a sculpture nor a dedication to Diana, or Artemis. No such programme was ever elaborated here. The Diana
héritage lay imbedded in the Alban Hills. No further allusions were needed.

When in the 18th century Ariccia became a much popular travel goal for travellers, including connois-
seurs, artists, and authors, the antique Diana héritage may have corne more to the fore again. Perhaps it even
had a direct or indirect impact on the fashion for contemporary garden structures dedicated to Diana, whether
temples or statues (Figs. 9-11). This point may be worth further investigation, because the trend to have
garden motifs created in memory of spécifie travel goals thrived parallel to the propagation of poetic, myth-
ological and political allusions.

ceeding. The "selva oscura délia Valle Aricina" is gaining a new audience, and the old treasures of the site
