by incorporating the relics from the Potocki collection from Krzeszowice. Etruscan
relics are of reasonable interest. Roman civilisation is represented by samples of
materiał culture and by sculptures, mainly portraits and sarcophagi. The collection
of fragments of sarcophagi was greatly enriched after the exhibits from Krzeszowice
were brought to Kraków. Fragments of frescoes (traditionally called „Pompeian fres-
coes”) and portraits from Fayoum comprise an important and very valuable group
of relics. Another valuable part of the assemblage is the collection of Egyptian,
Greek, Etruscan and Roman jewellry.

The collections described above provide interesting materiał for scholars, and
the articles published in this volume present some of the results of their investiga-
tion. Though closely related to the National Museum collections, they are also con-
nected with the investigations of Greek art and culture are a significant ąuestion.
The fact that recent excavations carried out in Egypt, Sudan, the Middle East and
some countries in Europę by Polish archeologists (almost all authors of the present
articales took part in those) is not discusses here, is due to the character of this
publication. It should nevertheless be mentioned that the present activities of Po-
lish archeologists are the result of close co-operation between the Departments of
Mediterranean Archeology at the Universities of Kraków and Warsaw and the mu-
seums, and are based on the organization of the Polish Academy of Science.
