ftyle of competition between the richnefs of the Corinthian and
the plainnefs of the Tufcan order: for which reafon, in the
figurative ftyle, it has been compared to a fedate matron, in de-
cent rather than rich attire.
This order, being of a grave caft, is often employed in
courts of juftice, and in the infide of churches, and other places
of that kind: in libraries and colleges alfo, and in all places that
belong to arts and letters. . x
The general proportions are as follows:
The height of the entire order is divided into five equal
parts. One part is given for the pedeftal, and the remaining
four are. divided into fix; one of which is afligned for the
height of the entablature, and the remaining five will be the
height of the column, including the bafe and capital. The
height afligned for the column is then divided into nine, one of
which is for the inferior diameter or module.
The cornice is forty-four minutes high, and its projection
is equal to its height. The drip in the under fide of the corona
is channeled out one minute deep within two of the front, and
one minute before the cyma-reverfa.
