45. The Four Elements, personified by single figures with
appropriate emblems :—
Air is represented by a sportsman carrying a hawk on his hand,
and accompanied by two dogs.
Water, by a fisherman, with a large fish attached to a string;
other men are seen in the distance, drawing their nets.
Fire, by an elderly man working at an anvil; in the back-
ground is a smith at a forge.
Earth, by a peasant with a spade in one hand and his hat in
the other; in the distance are seen reapers at work.

a house, reading a book.
Hearing, by a mendicant playing on the hurdy-gurdy.
Smelling, by a gardener standing with a spade in his hand,
smelling a pink.
Tasting, by a hawker carrying a basket of liquors.
Feeling, by an artisan removing the dressing from a wound
on his hand.
