%* Much controversy has arisen among bibliographers as to the priority of these
editions, both of which we have carefully examined, and therefore submit
the following reasons for our assigning the priority to that printed by Fust.
The editor, in his preliminary epistle, informs us that he committed the Manu-
script “ discreto viro J ohanni fust incole maguntinensi impressorie artis
mgro;” and that he (John Fust), for the accommodation and use of the
reader, made, with much labour, an alphabetical index, and “ Duas
Figuras” (vide end of his edition); and also, in addition, he placed letters
in the margins, thereby forming a double reference.
The epistle of the editor in the second edition states, that the manuscript was
entrusted '■'■discreto viro Johanni me/itelin incole argetinensi impressorie
artis mgro.” The substance of the first part of the Epistle is the same as in
the previous edition; but the last page differs materially; The editor, or the
printer, therein alludes to the table and marginal references (printed in the
previous edition), and states that he has in this book, alluding to the marginal
references, placed them “ intra marginesand adds that, if anybody
chooses, it will be easy for him to add them also in the margins with a pen.
