The periods of the execution of manuscripts upon paper are often to be
more correctly ascertained from the water-marks of the paper, than from
the peculiar character of their writing, as the style of writing continued
with little difference from one century to another, more particularly in
Monasteries or Colleges, from whence a great portion of the manuscripts
existing have emanated; so that, judging from the writing alone, a MS. of
the fourteenth century might oftentimes be ascribed to the fifteenth, and
vice versa.
Being anxious to ascertain the date, as far as possible, of the present volume,
and not agreeing with Dr. Kloss as to the period to which he had placed
it, we addressed ourselves to our friend, Mr. Ottley, whom, we knew, had
made this subject his particular study; and in answer to our enquiry, he
writes as follows:—
“ I have found this paper-mark in a leaf coming from a book of accounts at
the Hague, of the year 1518; and I am of opinion that, as nearly as may
be, this is the true date of this specimen.”
