Joan ofArc

in 1886
SUMMARY

The National Museum in Kraków was established
in October 1879. The institution was opened to the
public in 188 3, which was a time when the first tem-
porary exhibitions were held. In 1884, the Cloth Hall
showed the painting Jan Zamoyski at Byczyna by Jan
Matejko, one of the preeminent Polish painters. The
author provides an account of the show held in one
of the rooms of the National Museum in Kraków, of
Matejko ’s biggest, monumental work titled Joan of
Arc, completed in 1886. The painting was on display
in the very heart of Kraków in late May 1886 for
a mere few days. The article presents moreover an
assessment of this project, organized in a museum,
which was opened to the public just a few years ear-
lier. Matejko ’s Joan ofArc is on display in the Rogalin
Pałace, branch of the National Museum in Poznań.
