The formula in 11. 1—2 is found also in inscriptions from Salkhad, our no. 159
and R. A. O. v (1903), p. 172, and Shfekh Meskin, R. A. O. v (1903), p. 27. In the

the expression is to be restored in 1. 1 of this inscription. The sentiment in 1. 3 must

609. Lintel. Described by Waddington as
height 21 cm.

Waddington, no.

“linteau de porte”.

T Π + Π T

Length 1 m.;

Our copy agrees in every detail with Waddington’s.
Waddington comments “Je ne saurais expliquer ces lettres”, and we find our-
selves in the same predicament. The letters may denote a number read bisymmetrically,
z. e. = 380, which may be taken either as a date (485 a. d.), or as the numerical
equivalent of some formula, as in no. 269. On the other hand, they may be the
initial letters of some text or motto, abbreviated in this way in order that the unini-
tiated or the malevolent might not be able to read it.

610. Stele. Found in the house which
belongs to the Greek priest. A Nabataean
inscription was found in this house also;
see Div. IV. Nab. Inscrs. no. 93. The
stele is embedded in the pavement. Height
73-75 cm.; width 37 cm. The face is much
worn, and the letters are hardly legible.
Height of letters 7—9 cm.
