Is-Sanamen.

297
In (the) fifth year of the (rule) of (the) Emperor Tiberius Claudius Caesar
Augustus Germanicus, Eunomos, (son) of Hektor, and Aias and Nikaios, (his) brothers,
began to build in the temple this part at their own (expense), in honor of the Lord
Zeiis, as a mark of piety and gratitude. (45 a. d.)
Inscriptions of the period of the Julio-Claudian Emperors have been found along
the Phoenician coast and at Djerash, but this is the earliest inscription bearing the name
of a Roman emperor which has been found east of the Anti-Lebanon. The year is
that which followed the death of Agrippa I, to whose kingdom is-Sanam&n may have
belonged, as it did to that of his son, according to an inscription dated in 92 a. d. ; Arch.-
Epigr. Mitt, vm (1884), p. 189, no. 27 = P. E. F. 1895, p. 58, no. 46 = I. S. O. G. 426.
In 1. 1 ηγε/χονίας is evidently to be supplied with τζίς; its omission is probably an error.
Dedications to Zeus are recorded in other inscriptions from is-Sanamen; see
no. 6553, P. E. F. 1895, p. 55, no. 37 = C. I. G. 4559 corrected, and Arch.-Epigr.
Mitt, vm (1884), p. 189, no. 2'j=P.E.F. 1895, P· 5^> no· 46 = I. S. O. G. 426.
Our inscription seems to indicate beyond all doubt that there was a temple to Zeus
in the town, and this is borne out by the fact that classical temple-fragments, other
than those of the Tychaion, were found in and about the village.

6553. Lintel. Built into the south wall of a half-ruined mediaeval building,
which stands on rising ground in the northwest corner of the town about 200 metres
northwest of the Tychaion. Length 1.46 m.; height 55 cm. The inscription is within
a raised dovetailed frame. Length of the frame (excluding the dovetails) 93’^ cm.;
height 38^ cm. Height of letters cm. in h. I_3> 4“41/ζ cm· 'η the other lines.
Copied by Magie in 1909.
C.I.G. 4558 = Waddington, no. 24137.
