A.A.E.S. 49, 89, 112, etc., ύποθεσθε for ΰποθεσθαι, πωλχίσε for πωλ'Ζσαί, κοινώσε for κοινώσαι,
<?ώσι for ο'ΰ'σει. Similar threats and penalties for misuse or appropriation of tombs are
not infrequent is funerary inscriptions.
1068. Tomb, 235 a.d. On the rock over the entrance to a rock-hewn tomb,
similar to that of the preceding, and somewhat further north in the same hillside.
The tomb has a little vestibule containing two seats, and within a small chamber with
three sarcophagi. The inscription is incised in a dove-tail plate, which is sunk below
the surface. This plate is 41cm. broad by 27 cm. high, exclusive of the dove-tails.
The letters are about 5 cm. high. Under the Z of the third line there appears to have
been a flaw in the stone, where no letter was carved.

1069. Tomb, 359 a.d. Over the entrance to a similar rock-hewn tomb, south of
the preceding, in the same hillside. The inscription is incised in a plate, above and
also below which is carved A-FLU. The first two lines are as follows:

εκζ, του ζυζ έτους, Αρχας συν[ετέ](λ)ε-

There were originally five more lines. Traces of these remain, and might, perhaps,
be deciphered; but for lack of time I did not attempt to make a copy. The seventh
line seemed to be —T A B 0 C K A I - H 0 € C A- Over the Greek inscription very crude
Arabic letters have been carved, and these have helped to obliterate the original text:
the Arabic appears to be the familiar phrase “ There is no god but Allah."

are 17 cm. in height: the letters are 5cm. high.
