Der grofie Meister der Geschichte des Pfluges,
Professor Dr. phil. Paul Leser, m Sherman
Street, Hartford, Conn., 06105 USA, kann
am 23. Februar 1979 die 80. Wiederkehr seines
Geburtstags feiern. Er wurde in Frankfurt am
Main geboren, studierte an der Universitat
Bonn und wurde beriihmt durch sein grund-
legendes Werk »Entstehung und Verbreitung
des Pfluges«, das 1931 erschien (Anthro-
pos-Bibliothek III, 3, 677 Seiten; reprographi-
scher Neudruck 1971 mit einer kurzen Bio-
graphic des Verfassers und einer ausfiihrlichen
Bibliographic, ausgearbeitet von Grith Ler-
che, herausgegeben vom Internationalen Se-
kretariat fur die Erforschung der Geschichte
der Bodenbaugerate, Nationalmuseum, Bre-
de, DK-2800 Kopenhagen-Lyngby). Leser
muBte aus Deutschland fliichten und gelangte
via Schweden in die Vereinigten Staaten, wo er
Professor der Anthropologic an der Hartford
Seminary Foundation wurde, welchen Lehr-
stuhl er innehatte, bis er 1967 in den Ruhe-
stand trat. Nach dem Tod Professor Sigurd
Erixons im Jahre 1968 wurde er President des
Standigen Ausschusses fur die Erforschung
der Geschichte der Bodenbaugerate. Will
Schaber (Appartment C55, 106 Pinehurst
Ave., New York N.Y., 10033) bereitet eine
Festschrift zu Lesers Geburtstag vor. Aber
auch die Herausgeber von TOOLS AND
TILLAGE und das Internationale Sekretariat
wollen Professor Paul Leser - ihrem Freund
und Lehrmeister, ihrem Kollegen und Mitar-
beiter, einer der hervorragendsten und vor-
nehmsten Personlichkeiten der akademischen

The great master of the history of the plough,
Professor, Dr. phil. Paul Leser, m Sherman
Street, Hartford, Conn. 06105, USA,
celebrates his 80th birthday on the 23rd Fe-
bruary 1979. Born in Frankfurt am Main and
educated at the University of Bonn he became
famous for his fundamental work on the ori-
gin and diffusion of ploughs and ploughing,
published in 1931 (Entstehung und Verbre-
itung des Pfluges, Anthropos-Bibliothek III, 3
677 pages. Reproprint 1971 including a short
biography of the author and a comprehensive
bibliography by Grith Lerche, ed. Inter-
national Secretariat for Research on the Hi-
story of Agricultural Implements, National
Museum, Brede, DK-2800 Copenha-
gen-Lyngby).
As a refugee from Germany, Leser went
through Sweden to the United States, where
he became Professor of Anthropology at The
Hartford Seminary Foundation until he re-
tired in 1967. After Professor Sigurd Erixon’s
death in 1968 Paul Leser became President of
The Permanent International Committee for
Research on the History of Agricultural Im-
plements. A Festschrift is under preparation
by Will Schaber (Appartment C 55, 106 Pine-
hurst Ave., New York, N.Y. 10033). How-
ever, the editors of TOOLS AND TILLAGE
and The International Secretariat also wish to
pay their homage to Professor Paul Leser -
our friend and master, our colleague and co-
operator, and one of the most distinguished
and noble personalities in the academic world.
