Ancient European harvest-and-storage
systems: A working hypothesis
As the above survey has hopefully shown, the

form under which grain is stored (in bulk, in
the ear, in sheaves, etc.) is one of the most
central points in the structuring of any agri-
culture. The social level at which storage
takes place (household, farmer, landlord,
commerce, military, township, etc.), climate
and crop species, harvesting and processing
techniques, building and transport techno-
