THE TIME OF GLORY

Tlie Polisli Slale Uniled—

Wladyslaw ike Skorl Orowned in C

racow

Throughout the 13 th century, endeavors towards unifying the dis-
membered country were constantly repeated in spite of military
conflicts. The Germans, the Czechs, and the Hungarians
exploited the weakness of Poland for their own benefit. Roman
popes, who considered themselves judges in all moral and polit-
ical affairs, also tried to intervene and mediate in Poland. Two
coronation ceremonies took place in Gniezno. In 1295 Duke
Przemyslaw II of Great Poland was crowned and assumed the
title of the Polish King; and in 1300 the same title was given to
Przemyslaw’s son-in-law, Czech King Waclaw II. The latter was
not secure in his position and ordered strong walls with towers to
be built around Cracow. The walls, constantly repaired and
strengthened, survived intact until the 19 th century.
