Kosciuszko was born into a noble Polish family in Volhynia
(Wolyn) in 1746. He graduated from the Military School in
Warsaw with a specialization in engineering and the building of
fortifications. Between 1776 and 1783, he participated in the
Revolutionary War in the United States, distinguishing himself
in the siege of Saratoga and West Point. He became friends with
Jefferson and was awarded the Cincinnati Order.

In 1784 he returned to Poland and joined the army in the
rank of general-major. After bravely acquitting himself in the
lost war effort against Russia in 1792, he left for Leipzig and
then for Lwow. He immediately began to organize a new
uprising against Russia, hoping for aid from France. On 24
