Progress of Egyptology.
The curious nebhj name of Chephren engraved on his statues is not
faulty. Schafer, A.Z. xli. 87.
M. Legrain prints an outline of the results of his great find at Karnak,
in the Bee. de Travaux, xxvii. 61. The Old Empire is scarcely repre-
sented in it at all; but of the Middle Empire there are several statues
of the Xlth, Xllth, and XHIth Dynasties. Of the New Empire there
are many statues dating from the XVIIIth, XlXth, and XXth Dynasties.
Of the XXTst Dynasty there is strangely little, of the XXIIncl an abun-
dance of private monuments. The genealogy of the priestly family of
Soma traced in these records begins in the reign of Merenptah I,
and ends in the reign of Osorkon I; that of Nekhtefmut is long and
instructive, being connected with the royal line of the Bubastites at several
points. Another series seems to show that the XXIIIrd Dynasty followed
almost immediately after Osorkon II, and, if so, was contemporary with the
later kings of the XXIInd Dynasty. Bocchoris, of the XXIVth, is not
traceable at Thebes. The XXVth Dynasty is well represented, as are the
XXVIth and some of the later dynasties clown to the conquest by
Alexander; but these have not yet been fully studied. The most important
monument of all, taken individually, appears to be the stela recounting the
history of Ankhnesneferebre, which gives the precise date of the death of
Psammetichus II and the succession of Apries, with many other important
particulars.
Prof. Breasted attempts the reconstruction of the Xlth Dynasty, in-
cluding in it three Antefs and four Menthoteps. Amer. Jouni. Sem. Lang.
xxi. 110 (also in Meyer's Aegyptische Ghronologie). A subsequent dis-
covery has enabled him to correct some of the results (above p. 36).
A royal golden-hawk name, surcharged by that of Sebekhotep II, from
Karnak. Legrain, Ann. v. 133. Xote on statues of three new kings of
the Middle Kingdom, a Menthotep, a Xeferhotep, and a Sebekhotep. The
first two bear prenomens which occur in the Turin Papyrus, but with
different personal names, Ana and Andu. id. Bee. de Trav. xxvi. 218.
A certain king's name reads Mermenfitiu, not Mer-mesha. Spiegel-
berg, Bee. de Trav. xxvi. 149.
A doctorial dissertation b}r Pieper, die Konige Mgyptens zwischen dem
mittleren und neuen Beich, is a useful collection of material regarding the
kings between the Xllth and XVIIIth Dynasties, with some suggested
corrections of the order of the fragments of the Turin Papyrus.
Mr. Hall writes fully on Nitocris-Ehodopis. The Egyptian courtesan
Rhodopis built the Third Pyramid of Grizeh, according to one of the accounts
preserved by Herodotus, while according to the " more credible " story it
