OU PAREMENT DE CHAPE.
On donnait autrefois le nom
d’orfroi aux étoffes tissuesd’or:
ce nom s’est conservé dans la
liturgie catholique, pour dési-
gner les parements d’une
chape ou d'une chasuble. —
Le fragment que nous repro-
duisons ci-contre a été dessiné
à l’Exposition rétrospective du
Musée des Arts décoratifs de
1882, où il avait été envoyé par
le musée du South Kensington.
Il est reproduit de la grandeur
môme de l’original. Le fond de
la soie est damassé avec un fil
d’or, et le ton de la gravure
rend à peu près la valeur du
tissu. — Le dessin représente
la Vierge et l’Enfant Jésus,
d’un caractère un peu primitif,
et où les têtes et les mains
paraissent avoir conservé des
tons de chair. — Ils sont assis
sur un siège à dossier et abri-
tés sous un dais gothique.
L’enfant-Dieu montre une che-
velure naïve entourée d’un
nimbe crucifère. La Vierge
est couronnée et nimbée éga-
lement, et le vêtement est assez
correctement dessiné , bien
qu’il rappelle vaguement une
époque antérieure à la confec-
tion de ce tissu d’origine alle-
mande.— En résumé, ce frag-
ment de tissu du xvc siècle est
plus curieux que beau; et l’on
se croirait, en vérité, en face
d’un objet, d’époque romane
et tracé par une main de mé-
diocre habileté.

The stuffs interwoven witli
gold wore callcd formerly or-
frays or gold cloth : this
name lias been preserved in
the catholic liturgy to desi-
gnate the facings of a copc or
chasuble. The part that wc
reproduce was drawn at the
rétrospective Exhibition of the
Musée des Arts décoratifs of
1882, where it had been sent by
the South Kensington Mu-
séum. It isreproduced full size
of the original. The ground
work is of damask silk and gold
thread : our engraving renders
very nearly the tone of the
tissue. The design represents
the Blcssed Virgin and Infant
Christ of a ratlier primitive
type, the heads and hands o
which seem to hâve rctained
parts of the colour of flesh.
Thcy are scated on a liigh
backed chair under a gothic
canopy. The Infant God shows
a rather artless bcad of hair
surroundcd with a cruciform
nimbus. The Virgin wears a
crown cncircled also with a
nimbus ; theelothing is pretty
correctly drawn, although it
reminds onc vaguely of an
epoch prior to that to which
bclongs this german tissue.
In fact, this article, dating
from the xvth century, is
more curions than beautiful,
and one could verily believe it
belongs to the romanesque pe-
riod and was designed by an
unskilful hand.
