PLASTER, GROUP—PAOLO AND FRANCESCA. BY A. HUNRO.
Mr, Musbo, iu tliis little group, seeks to realise the incident described
l>y Dilute, oi1 rather by his heroine. Franeesca, for she ia supposed to relnto
her own sad story to lihu, in the following passage, as translated by Gary :—

render through this medium, because it is a material always colourable
and even to express tho idea of strong emotion as convoyed through the
eyes, is a thing which has never been attempted iu tho plastic art. Never-
theless, Mr. Jfunro. who is a young artist of wry considerable promise, has
produced iv very pretty and graceful composition, though at the same time
one which, costume, aecensorii's, and ail considered, would have been better
adapted for a painting than a work in plaster. As regards expression, ho
has certainly accomplished a great deal-—much more than wo would liavo
been prepared to expect: tin: face of Paolo is earnest and impassioned in
the extreme: it tells of a devouring passion long pent up, now first reveal-
ing itself; that of Fraucesea confesses a reciprocity of feeling, but with a
modest hesitating reserve, which is admirably true to tho more delicate
poetry of the situation. Since this group was exhibited, we arc glad to
understand that Sir. Gladstone lias commissioned the artist to execute it ill
marble.

Tins very graceful production reflouts the highest credit upon Mr. M'Dowsll's

talent. The expression is extremely charming, and the attitude simple and

effective. It stood in the southern transept, where it was gre&tiy admired.
