Ferrara., Ravenna^ Rimini. 91
Libertatis opus contulit una Dies.
Naufraga mors pariter rapuit quos junxe-
\rat antb^
Et duplices luStus mors periniqua dedit.
Both with the same Indulgent Matter
bless’d,
On the same Day their Liberty possess’d:
before,
And left their common Friends their
Fun’rals to deplore.
There is a Turn in the Third Verse
that we lose, by not knowing the Cir-
cumstances of their Story. It was the
Nausraga mors which destroyed them,
as it had formerly united themj what
this Union was is expressed in the pre-
ceding Verse, by their both having been
made Free-men on the same Day. If
therefore we suppose they had beenfor-
and that he made them Free at the same
time, the Epigram is unriddled. Nor is
this Interpretation perhaps so forc’d as
it may seem at firfl sight, since it was
the Custom of the Matters, a little be-
fore their Death, to give their Slaves
their Freedom, if they had deserv’d it at
their Hands 5 and it is natural enough
