XVIIIe SIECLE. — école française. PANNEAUX. — DECORATION PEINTE

Tous les motifs de panneaux peints, sculptés ou seulement
dessinés de cette féconde époque offrent une véritable simili-
tude, et sont, pour ainsi dire, le sceau d'une décoration gracieuse
et élégante qui triompha à Versailles dans les intérieurs du
Petit Trianon.
Il subsiste encore un grand nombre de dessins de maîtres de
la fin du xviiie siècle, ayant trait aux décorations d'appartements,
et la gravure, de son côté, n'a rien épargné pour populariser
cette sorte de rénovation de l'art qui s'éteignit assez misérable-
ment sous le Directoire et sous le premier Empire.
Les deux panneaux que nous figurons ici sont de la bonne
époque de Louis XVI.

Ail the panels painted, carved, or only designed, of tliat
fecund epoch, offer a real likeness and, one may say, the
climax of a graceful and élégant décoration wliose triumph
took place at Versailles in the interiors of the Petit-Trianon.
There exist still a large number of drawings from the masters
of the end of the xvmth century, relating to décorations of
rooms, and the engraving, too, lias left nothing untried in
order to popularize that kind of a rénovation of the art which
died off, rather miserably, under the Directory and the first
Empire.
The two panels here represented belong to the good epoch of
Louis XVI.
