On n'atteindra jamais en France ni en Europe à la fantaisie
sans frein des Japonais et des Chinois. Voici trois candélabres
qui peuvent passer pour des modèles du genre, notamment celui
du milieu, représentation d'une scène étrange où Ton croit voir
des acrobates dans l'exercice de leurs fonctions. Une sorte
d'échelle sert de tige au chandelier, et sur l'un des échelons est
perché un musicien; le porte-mouchettes se voit plus haut. Les
deux autres objets sont moins étranges : ce sont ces derniers qui
étirent de préférence être proposés à l'imitation.

In France nor even in Europe can \ve ever prétend aiming at
the bouiidless " fantaisie " of the Chinese or Japanese artists.
The three candelabras above are perfect spécimens in tiieir
kind, particularly the central one figuring as it were a strange
scène where mountebanks seem to play their tricks. The stem
of the candlostik represents a ladder, upon one of its steps sits
a mu-ician, above him projects the snuffer hanger.
The two otliers are not so quaintaud ought to be preferred as
models.
