XII" SIÈCLE. — école française. VITRAIL DANS L'ÉGLISE DE LA TRINITÉ A VENDOME.
On peut dire, sans trop d'he'sitation, que ce vitrail est pins
remarquable par ses qualités archéologiques que par ses mé-
rites artistiques. Les tons en sont fort beaux, il est vrai, mais
le dessin, par trop archaïque, laisse beaucoup à désirer. La
Vierge triomphante, disposée dans une orbe il deux pointes et
son fils sur les genoux, est portée au ciel par des anges: c'est
donc l'Ascension que le peintre du XIIe siècle a voulu repré-
senter. La tradition est fidèlement observée, on le voit; que
n en est-il de mémo de la proportion des personnages !

We must rcadily acknowledge that the ahove painted glass
is more remarkahle for his archeological than for bis artistical
qualifies. Its gênerai toning is very fine, to be sure; but the
design far too archaic, leaves mucli to désire. The lloly
Virgin in lier glory with lier son upon lier lap, is inscribed in
a mandorla and borne to heaven by angels. The painter of
the Xllth century lias represented the Ascension. The tradition
is carefully observed; why is it not so as regards the propor-
tion of ihe figures !
