ARMOIRE A BIJOUX
DE LA REINE MARIE-ANTOINETTE.
Nous montrons, sur cette page, le grand médaillon, ou panneau central, du meuble de Marie-
Antoinette dont l’ensemble est reproduit à la page précédente. L’artiste, ou plutôt les artistes,
y ont figuré une Renommée ailée tenant en main des couronnes et l’écusson fleurdelisé de France,
voltigeant au-dessus de quatre muses portant chacune leur attribut. La Peinture tient une
palette sur les genoux : elle donne le bras à la Musique, à la Sculpture et à l’Architecture. Ces
bas-reliefs sont admirables de tous points, et nous ne pouvons leur comparer, comme perfection,
que la couronne circulaire qui les entoure et où nous voyons disposés, au milieu d’élégants rin-
ceaux d’une ciselure parfaite, de petits médaillons à sujet tantôt de forme circulaire, tantôt de
forme rectangulaire. Les quatre écoinçons sont en cuivre ajouré et ciselé, disposés, comme le cadre
principal, sur un fond de nacre blanc absolument uni.

On this page wô represent the centre panel of the cabinet of Marie-Antoinette of which the
tc ensemble’’ bas been reproduced on the preceeding page. The artist, or rather the artists, hâve
represented there a figure of Famé winged and holding crowns in one hand and the escutcheon
of France in the other, hovering ahove four Muses each one bearing its own Symbol. The muse
of Painting holds on lier knees a palette; she gives her hand to the other three, Music,
Sculpture and Architecture. These bassi-rilievi are in every way admirable and as regards per-
fection, we can only compare them to the circular crown which surrounds them, and where
we see placed in the centre of exquisitcly chased foliage, smaller panels of circular or rec-
tangular form showing various subjects. The four hrass angles are openworked and chased,
and like the principal frame are placed upon a perfeetîy smooth ground of white mother of pearl»
