LECTURE VIII.

^17 E are arrived, Ladies and Gentle*
men, at the laft lecture of the prefent
feries, wherein we propofe to inveftigate fome
of thofe principles which impart to the human
figure Character and Expression. The
firft of thefe articles, fo far as it relates to the
countenance, we have pretty largely attended
to at a former opportunity ; as many of thofe
remarks are equally applicable to the figure,
I prefume it will be moft agreeable to my
auditors only to offer fuch additional obfer-
vations as are mcft intimately connected with
our fubjedt.

If the proportions of the figure were always
the fame, there would be no occafion to form
any divifion of character as relating to differ-
ent periods of life, fince children would then
be men and women, differing only in ftature.
