possible due to challenging (in the Quo elongati buli) the legitimacy of those instruc-
tions of the Founder which were not explicitly included in the Rule. The spirituals
charged the conventual with habitual breaking of the rules of the building statutes.
In their opinion, the leaders of the order, instead of executing the law, were its most
eager violators.
Following the ideał of poverty in architecture largely depended on the morał
ąualifications and charisma of the order authorities, which was demonstrated by the
efforts of the English provincials. Still in the mid-13th century they tried to follow in
construction the tenets of St Francis. That might have been the most important
impediment to the development of the Minorite architecture in England which
flourished several decądes later than in Continental Europę. But even the severe
English ministers could not disregard prestigious foundations. Openly ignoring the
less outstanding founders, they could do nothing to ignore the generosity of King
Henry III.
