Her verdant robe betokens hope, without which no-body
would labour. The twelve figns of the zodiac intimate th«
different feafons which the tiller ought to obferve ; the plough
is the moft neceffary inftrument in Agriculture.

ALABASTER, a kind of ftone, fofter than marble, yet
harder than plaifter of Paris.

It is found of all colours ; fome extremely white and min-
ing, which is the moft common ; fome red like coral ; and
other called onyx, from its colour; which refembles that of
the onyx, though very different from it in nature.

Alabafter cuts very fmooth and eafy, and is much ufed by.
fculptors for little vafes, columns, &c.

It is alfo fometimes employed like plaifter of Paris : In order
to which they burn and calcine it; after which, mixing it up"
with water to a thin confidence, it is caft in a mould, where
it readily coagulates into a firm body.

How to clean Alabaster. Beat pumice-fiones to an im-
palpable powder, and mix it up with verjuice ; let it ftand
thus for two hours: Then dip in it a fponge, and rub the mar-
ble or Alabafter therewith ; wafli it with a linen cloth and frefh
water, and dry it with clean linen rags.

Francifco ALBANI, a Bolognefe, born in the year 1578, a
difciple of the Carraches, one of the moft agreeable pencils in
the world, in all parts of painting ; but principally admired for
his performances in little, and had a peculiar genius for naked
figures; and, the better to accomplifh himfelf for thatpurpofe,
married a beautiful woman, and ufed himfelf to the defigning
of naked Venus's, the graces, nymphs, &c. and little children,
Cupids dancing and playing in all the variety of poftures ima-
ginable. He died anno 1660, aged eighty-two years.

Cherubino ALBERTO Borghegiana, i. e. de Borgo> S. S-e-
pukhro, ufed the two marks you will fee on plate I, N°. 3, 5.
Pie engraved the works of Michael Angelo and others.

ALBERT ALDOGRAFT, of Weftphalia, a famous en-
graver, marked his pieces with the mark on plate I, N°. 6.

ALGA, is a plant that grows by the fea-fide, and thence
is called fea-weed, or fea-mofsj it is found on moft coafts,
thrown up by the fea,

This herb, when gathered, if it be kept frefh and moift
fome time, will fhew afterwards its white fait on the furface of
its leaves. The inhabitants of thofe parts nigh the fea com-
monly gather it together on the fhore, and dry it by often turn--
ii3g it in the fun, as hay is made; after it is dry they burn it, and
its afb.es yield an alkali fait, fit for making glafs and alum.
