ftdmirer of uglinefs and grimace, both in his fmall and great pie-
tes ; in which he feldorri forgot to endeavour to raife mirth in
his countrymen and ours, of the fame fublime genius. He died
about thirty years ago.

David Van BOONS inv. and after this mark we
read Oons; his plates were engraven by P. Ser-
vator, fc.

BORAX, is a particular fait, brought from feveral parts of
the dominions of the Great Mogul, in Perfia and in fome parts
of Tartary. In thefe, and other parts of the Eaft, there oozes*
out of the fide of hills which contain metals, and particularly
copper, a thick turbid water of a bluifh-grey colour* and of a
brackifh bitter, and very difagreeable tafte. This, where it runs
in fufficient quantity, is generally taken care of for ufe, being
directed in its courfe into wide and fhallow pits, lined with a
ftiff clay ; In thefe it is left expofed to the fun, in order to eva-
porate, by the people who have the care of it; and, when the
grey fine mud, left in its paffage, is brought to the confiftence
of a foft pap, they throw into it, in the middle of a hot day, a
large quantity of fome animals fat melted over the fire. This
is all well ftirred together, and then covered with flicks and
boughs of trees; and over there is thrown a cruft of any com-
mon clay. Thus it is left till perfectly dried up, then the co-
vering is taken off, and the whole fifted, to feparate the earth
and dirt; and in the fieves is found what is fent to us under
the name of rough Borax, which is in rude irregular maffes,
but fomewhat approaching to a prifmatic figure; very foul,
earthy, and fattifh, of a dufky greenifli colour, and having a
particular rank and difagreeable fmell.

This is afterwards refined for ufe, by diffolving it feveral
times in large quantities, and cryftallifing it, while the liquor is
hot and kept clofe covered from the air; and finally being dif-
folved in a lixivium of quick-lime and pot-afhes, and cryftal-
lifed in the fame manner, is what we call refined Borax.

Paris BORDONE, born in the year 1512, or 1526, fcho-
lar of Titian, imitated Giorgione, lived at Venice, and in
France ; excelled in hiftory and portraits, died aged feventy-five
years.

BOREAS, the north-wind, is reprefented, in painting, like
an' old man with a horrible or terrible look ; his hair and beard
covered with fnow, or the hoar-froft, with the feet and tail of
a ferpent.

Francis BOROMEO da SAVIGNANO, born in the year
1446, fcholar to Cofimo RoiFelli, and ftudied Leonardo da
Vinci, lived at Florence ; excelled in portraits and hiftory
p-ainting, died in the year 1517, aged forty-eight years.
