ture, which are inserted in the walls of
the castle, may perhaps add some weight
to this conjecture; they represent funeral
processions, as well as combats between
clothed and naked figures; subjects very
likely to have been found among the
ruins of that splendid monument, in the
decoration of which the most eminent
artists of the age were competitors.
According to Vertot,* this castle Avas
constructed in great haste about the year
1402, by the Knights of Rhodes, on the
foundations of one which they had just
surprised. They were probably more
intent on its strength than on the preser-
vation of pagan relics, however beautiful;
if, therefore, the mausoleum had stood
in the upper part of the city, they would
hardly have transported these thin mar-
