town, though we learned from an intel-
ligent Greek that it contained many re-
mains of antiquity. He said there were
also several moskes, but that most of
them were paltry buildings: from the

narehs, one of which is fluted from the
base up to the gallery that surrounds the
head of the shaft.
The port is inclosed by two stone piers,
which once had towers on the extremi-
ties ; but they are now in a ruinous state,
and the inroads of the sea unite with the
