shaft, across which it now lies, somewhat
in the form of the letter "J"

Near the landing place, and standing
alone, there is a small square mausoleum
with a pyramidal roof of twelve faces; it
has an inscription over the door, appa-
rently in Arabic, but which no one, to
whom I have shewn it, has been able to
decipher. The rest of the tombs are at
the other extremity of the town; some
of them are large buildings neatly fi-
nished, with Corinthian pilasters, and in
excellent preservation.

The remains of a theatre were found,
and a multitude of other ruins too nu-
merous to detail: but the most striking
proof of the former grandeur of this place
appears in the elaborate pains bestowed
on providing a supply of water. Besides
many capacious reservoirs, there were
three aqueducts : two of them cross the
ravine to the westward of the town, on
double tiers of arches"; these are compa-
ratively short, but the third, winding
