niżej dokumentach stale przewijają się - obok wielu innych - nazwiska pracujących dla
króla artystów: Marcella Bacciarellego, Bellotta-Canaletta, Lebruna, Lohrmanna, Łęskiego,
Marteau, Merliniego, Monaldiego, Plerscha, Regulskiego czy Tokarskiego. I tak np. Monal-
di z okazji chrztu swoich dzieci otrzymał od monarchy 27 września 1779 r. dwa pierścienie
diamentowe, o wartości 40 dukatów każdy24, a Lohrmann został obdarowany, w 1780 i 1781
r., dwiema tabakierkami - agatową obrzeżoną brylantami (o wartości 50 dukatów) i złotą
emaliowaną (wartą 130 dukatów)25. Szczególnie hojnie Stanisław August potraktował swe-
go geografa, Karola de Perthees, wspomagając go finansowo dokładnie 26 razy, a 19 marca
1780 r. obdarowując dodatkowo tabakierką porcelanową, malowaną i złoconą26. Trudno w
tym kontekście wytłumaczyć, dlaczego ani razu nie pada tu nazwisko Marstallera, obecnego
na dworze królewskim w przybliżeniu w latach 1765-1785, nawet jeżeli uwzględni się wy-
rywkowość zachowanych dokumentów. Osoba interesującego nas artysty (który przecież
musiał znać Stanisława Augusta!) pozostaje nadal zagadkowa, wszakże trzeba wierzyć, że
zwyczajny przypadek kiedyś uchyli rąbka tajemnicy.
Further Word on Gottlieb Marstaller, the Warsaw engraver
Book illustration in the form of title headpiece and
tailpiece vignettes as well as pictures sensu stricto
became the speciality of Gottlieb Jacob Marstaller, a
professional etcher employed on a permanent basis
at the court of Stanislaus Augustus in 1765 to 1785.
The artist did not sign all his works, which is why the
list of potentially attributable ilustrations remains
open to revision. As a result of finał penetrations
made into 18th-century old prints of Warsaw housed
in the National Library, almost ten new works have
been attributed to Marstaller, each being an unsigned
copperplate etching combined with watercolours.
This research was carried out with the additional aid
of comparative analysis of the etcher's known and
previously published works: all, generally miniature,
compositions feature Marstaller's characteristic
treatment of human figures, clothing, landscape
with flora and clouds, royal monograms or the
character of letters in the accompanying explanatory
inscriptions.
As a rule, vignettes of allegorical content dating
from the 1770s present women figures with the ap-
propriate attributes, including swords, trumpets, sick-
les, open tomes, snakes devouring their own tails and
such like, which are printed on the title pages of works
published by Michał Gróll. These are printed copies
of Samuel Szymanowski 's Joel Prorok Starozakonny
(Warszawa 1772), Adolf Kamieński's Przyiaźń
patriotyczna (Warszawa 1772) as well as the latter's
Edukacya obywatelska (Warszawa 1774), Franciszek
Bohomolec's Junak. Komedya w trzech aktach
(Warszawa 1774), as well as the anonymously pub-
lished comedy Pieniacz (Warszawa 1775). A vignette
depicting the royal monogram SAR (Stanislaus
Augustus Rex), surmounted with a crown and set
against the background of 'glory' has a quite separate
character. Successive versions of the royal emblem
were reproduced in Andrzej Zamoyski's Zbior praw
sądowych na mocy Konstytucyi roku 1776
(Warszawa 1778), as well as in German translation
Sammlung Gerichtlicher Gesetze... (Warschau,
Lemberg u. Dresden 1780), the anonymous Principes
de tout Gouvemement(Varsovie & Dresde 1768) and
Tacitus's 'Complete Works' (Dzieła wszystkie;
Warszawa 1772). The vignettes listed here were
carried out by Marstaller almost certainly in accordance
with his own drawings, although in the case of illus-
trations to Jean-Franęois MarmonteTs widely read
