French artist based on the drawings of Hubert-
Franęois Bourguignon d'Anville, pseudonym
Gravelot. Published in Warsaw and 'decorated with
koperstichs' by Marstaller, three editions of Belisaire
brought out in 1769 and 1779 at Jan August Poser's,
as well as in 1787 at the printing house of Piotr
Dufour. Four compositions were placed within:
a fly-title print as well as three remaining pictures
between the pages ofthe text, depicting scenes from
the life of the famous commander of Justinian's
armed forces. In relation to the prints of the first
edition from Paris ( 1767), Marstaller's works possess

somewhat larger format, but remain faithful in
composition, alongside their Polish inscriptions, to
the originals, although one has been reversed.
The above-listed copperplates attributed to
Marstaller confirm only his high reputation among
Warsaw's milieu of etchers in the second half of the
18th century; nor is it the first time that researchers
wonder at how it possibly came to pass that they
know virtually nothing about the life of this better-
than-average artist; even basie information such as
where and when he was born and died. To this day,
the person and personality of Gottlied Marstaller
remain a mystery.
