FOUR-LEGGED JAR. Ht. 3; in. From Yortan, as A 1, etc. Plate II.

Shape as A 47, incised decoration. Around the middle of the body is a
broad band of double zig-zag, forming two chevrons between each knob and lug,
and below the base of neck a fringe of pairs of circles hanging by a vertical line
from a single band. Grey-black ware with remains of polish.

THREE-LEGGED JAR. Ht. 5 in. From Yortan, as A 1, etc. Two legs restored. Plate II.

Shape as A 45, but the body has a sharply curved shoulder and the lip is
turned out, not flanged. Elaborate incised decoration : around the body is a
zig-zag band, forming a large chevron between each knob and lug, and com-
posed of a single zig-zag between single lines with the alternate triangles filled
with three dots. Below base of neck is a fringe of pendent lozenges each
containing a dot. Black ware, half discoloured brown, with remains of polish.

LIDS of jars. Diam. 3,', in. to i{ in. From Yortan, as A 1, etc. Plate II.

These belonged to jars with flanged lips, as A 45, etc. (Figs. 13, 14), and are
each pierced with two holes corresponding to the holes in the necks of the jars ;
nos. 10 and 11 have four holes. The shape ranges from an almost flat disc to
a low cone or dome, with central knob handle, conical, flat, or cylindrical; no. 10
ls a disc with turned-down edges and four pinnacles on the rim. Three are

plain brown or black ware, the rest have incised decoration. The patterns are
double or triple chevrons, dots between single lines, triple curves, double circles
triangles cross-hatched or filled with circles, and strips of herring-bone. (Fig. 15.)

[Pinnacle lids as 10 occur in Troy I, •S-..?. 188 ; for the incision cf. 6"^. 2459. The white
substance which fills the incisions on these and other pieces is not an ancient inlay : the vases
when acquired were covered with the same white deposit, not having been washed since their
excavation. They showed no signs of artificial filling.]
