9. The Presentation of the dead Christ by God ths Father and the Virgin, Tiro! master, ca 1500,
Tosters, Parish Church (after D. Frey)

Having described the Pieta episode, Jacob relates, substantially as he does, of the two events,
which we usually cali the Lamentation over the dead Christ and the Entombment. His narrative
betrays a deep acąuaintance of its author with older literary tradition going back to
St Augustine.

In the Golden Legend Jacob included a chapter on the Virgin Mary on Calvary, which he
entitled De Nostra Domina de Pietate.32 A passage of the chapter leads us to conjecture that
the writer mentioned here an image of the Pieta: Certain Dominican Friar, we are told, delivered
a sermon de Pietate Virginis gloriosae and then advised ut fratres dicerent orationem ante Domi-
nam Nostrcm de Pietate.

St Yincent Ferrer (ca 1350-1419) briefly states in his sermon on the Good Friday: Haec de-
positio secundum Bedam et Orygenem facta est praesente matre Maria, quae corpus sui depositum
suis brachiis — ut pie creditur — dulcissimis amplexata fuit...33

A Dominican preacher and writer Gabricllo Barletta (f ca 1470) describes the event we
are concerned with as follows: Deposuerunt corpus Iesu de cruce. O quis explicare possel immensum
dolorem Mariae quae tota lachrymzbilis, rapuit eius sanctissimum corpus in gremio...31
