The teaching flowing from the extreme exhaustion of Christ visualized hy His painful and
despiteful sitting during the Way to Calvary was particularly useful for the men tired with their
own hardship. It may explain an old custom of placing carved statues of Christ in Distress along
the roads. It was such a representation that seems to be recommended to the pilgrims' atten-
tion by Jordan of Quedlinburg, who — together with Ubertino of Casale — was our guide on
the way toward the understanding of the image:
Peregrini pro penitentia et religiosi sub obedientia per vias euntes si aliąuando lassantur remo-
rari debenl istius itineris Chrisłi quo ducebatur ad patibulum ąuando ita lassus fuit ąuod crucem-
