:St Valentinels in St John’s Church in Desenzano del Garda (Brescia), The Covenant between
Abraham and Abimelech20 on the ceiling of S. Maria Maggiore Church in Bergamo, and St Maurice
Kneeling in front of Yirgin and Child21 in St Maurice’s Church in Breno. Another painting that
Baroncelli attributed to Herdt as a result of comparisons with the one in Desenzano del Garda
was Moses Striking Water firom the Rock22 in the Lovere parish church in Bergamo. She also
believes that the painting An Old Man Counting23, published by her, is by Herdt, which, in my
opinion, seems a reasonable attribution because of the similarities between this work and the
Antiąue Dealer from Karlsruhe. Herdt’s only Italian painting mentioned in Tieme-Becker,
Head of St Elizabeth the Franciscan24 from St Francis’s Church in Brescia, has been missing,
probably sińce 1834—53. Baroncelli believes that the painting Nativity25 from S. Maria in Yal-
-vendra Church, ascribed to Herdt in the 19th century literaturę, is not really the artist’s work,
but was ascribed to him because it was commissioned by the Boscio family who had earlier
commissioned the painting Moses Striking Water from the Rock. 19 20 21 22 23 24 25
