In 1667 Herdt created his greatest work, a series of paintings for Tasso’s Gerusalemme Libe-
rata. The following compositions on the subject have survived: Erminia at the Shepherds’x
(Canto VII, Fig. 3); Mortally Wounded Clorinda Baptised by Tancred (Canto XII, Fig. 4);
Rinaldo and Armida in Armida’s Magie Garden Peeped at by Carlo and Ubaldo (Canto XVI, Fig. 5);
Erminia Meeting Tancred (Canto XIX, Fig. 6); Rinaldo Stopping Armida from Suicide37 (Canto
