Somewhat later, in his manuscript written between 1784 and 1812, Andrea Schweigl39 mentions
nnspecified paintings by Herdt which had been sent here from Vienna for the governor’s newly
■erected country- and town-houses. It cannot be precluded that they were the paintings for
Gerusalemme Liberata. In bis study on art in Moravia, written in 18 3 840, Ernst Hawlik mentions
two paintings of the series in his possession that originated from the collection of Count Hugo
von Salm of Raitz. Because they were signed and dated I. D. HERDT. F. 1668, they must
have heen quite different paintings of the series, unknown to us. Only in the supplement written
in 184141 does he mention four compositions that the prelate Cyrill Napp placed in one room
alongside paintings by other artists, hitherto scattered all over the prelacy; the four compo-
sitions are undoubtedly the ones now in the Moravian Gallery in Brno. The write-ups indicate
-that there must have been morę paintings of the same series, and that the ones we know did not
necessarily have to be executed in Brno but, rather, painted in Vicnna, they were sent to Brno
early in the 19 th century.

Herdt’s paintings for Gerusalemme Liberata are quite remarkable in the artist’s oeuvre. Even
Hawlik, who wrote about them in the first half od the 19th century42, praised their composition.
