17. Jan de Herdt, St Annę with St Joseph (?) and St Joachim (?), drawing. Muzeum

Narodowe

18. Jan de Herdt, St Annę, drawing, Warsaw, Muzeum Narodowe

also shows soine affinities to Rubens’s work. The head of the torturer in the background on the
right, raising bis hand to strike Christ, is remarkably reminiscent of the head of Judith be-
heading Holofernes in a drawing by Rubens50 (Fig. 11).

Most of Herdt’s drawings in the National Museum in Warsaw are stylistically related to his
sketch for the Flagellation. They are all in pen, in a brownish tonę, broadly washed with a brush,
in the same tonę, upon pencil traces. All come from the Silesian album Dessins Originaux which
in the 19th century was in the Municipal Library in Wrocław51 52. They were probably all executed
at the same time, perhaps as designs for some paintings intended for the Waldhausen church.
These drawings include: Crucifixion52 (Fig. 12); St Agnes’s Martyrdom, the Cloak Miracle53 54 55 56
(Fig. 13); St Agnes’s(?) Martyrdom54 (Fig. 14); Holy Bishop Fed by the Birds55 (Fig. 15); Holy
Bishop Beheaded56 (Fig. 16); St Annę icith St Joseph (?) and St Joachim (?)57 58 (Fig. 17); St Anne5i
